Rules

1st Annual North American Alphorn & Büchel Competition
August 13-14, 2011, Solitude, Utah

Faculty, staff, and judges of the North American Alphorn Retreat/Competition will be ineligible to compete.

Rules: (Drawn from traditional Swiss Yodeling Association guidelines)
1. This competition is open to alphorns and büchels.
2. Competition categories are:
    Solo
    Ensemble (duet, trio, quartet or group of 5-16 players)
    Youth solo*
    Youth ensemble*
*In order to compete in the Youth category, the Competitor no more than 18 years of age as of August 14th, 2011.
3. Music must be performed from memory without sheet music and without a conductor.
4. Length of performances:
    Alphorn - Minimum 2 minutes/20seconds - maximum 4 minutes.
    Büchel - Minimum 1 minute/30 seconds – maximum 4 minutes.
5. Competitors may play no more than 6 warm-up tones before commencing their competition piece. Timekeeping will begin upon the first note of the Competitor’s piece.
6. Metal mouthpieces are not allowed.
7. Instruments for each piece must be in the same key. (No mixing of tonalities)
8. Competitors must be dressed in traditional attire: Minimum white shirt/blouse, black pants/skirt. (Ideally competitors will perform wearing traditional alpine costumes.)
Judging:
1. A panel of 3 judges will be seated behind a screen or tent and will not see or be aware of who is performing. Competitors will be identified solely by number.
2. Performances will be judged on the following criteria: Sound quality; breathing; technique; accuracy; flexibility; intonation; dynamics; phrasing; articulation; metric time; agogic rhythm; ensemble (for groups); and musical expression.

General:
1. Order of competitor performance will be drawn at random.
2. Number of permitted performances: In addition to participation in an ensemble (5-16 players), competitors may perform no more than twice, using the following configurations:
    a) a solo (alphorn or büchel)
    b) a duet, trio or quartet (alphorn or büchel)
    c) a solo alphorn and a solo büchel
    d) a solo (alphorn or büchel) and a duet, trio, or quartet (alphorn or büchel)
    e) a duet, trio or quartet (alphorn) and a duet, trio or quartet (büchel)
    f) two duets, trios or quartets (alphorn or büchel)
3. Preliminary competition round will take place on Saturday, August 13, 2011.
4. The 3 top scoring competitors in each category will advance to compete in the Final Round as part of the Grand Finale Concert on Sunday, August 14, 2011.

Finale:
1. Prize winners will be determined based on Sunday’s Final Round Competition also adjudicated by screened judges.
2. Final Round Competition performance order will also be determined by random drawing.
3. In the event of a small number of competitors, judges may at their discretion, combine competition categories.
